The True Qualities of an Authentic Leader

"Why should players choose to follow you?"

"Why should your child choose to follow you?"

"Why should teammates choose to follow you?"

To earn genuine followership, you need more than a title, role, and position. These things may make you a leader, but authentic leadership goes beyond that. It's about developing qualities that inspire others to follow you willingly, not because they have to, but because they believe in you.

In the military, soldiers don't willingly follow a leader into battle just because of the bars on their uniforms. They follow a leader who has shown courage, cares for their team, and makes sound decisions under pressure.

Similarly, in sports or any family, people follow others because they believe in them, not just because of a title. A title may give you authority, but trust and respect come through different means:

1. Don't hide behind your position. Your team will respect and follow a leader who sets the standard through their actions.

2. Build trust by being dependable. Show empathy, integrity, and fairness consistently in your leadership.

3. Be the kind of leader who earns respect. Listen, understand your team's needs, and make decisions in the mission's and your people's best interest.
