If you feel like you lack the discipline to get things done, you need to discover the secret to the next level.
Discipline is not always about willpower. However, sometimes you feel you don’t have enough of it to make the necessary changes you want in life. So here are two secrets that I have discovered that have made a massive difference in my ability to get things done.
There was a time in my life when I lost a significant amount of weight. One day I decided to get healthy and work to make that happen. On the outside, it would be easy to say that I was disciplined and had a lot of willpower. But I can share from experience that this was not the secret to my success. My success was in controlling my environment. I threw away junk food. I stopped buying soda and sweets and stocked the house with healthier options. When eating out, I offered alternative restaurants with more nutritional choices. I controlled my environment to make it easier to stick to my goal.
You can do the same regarding your desire to achieve your personal goal. For example, unplug your phone if you are constantly distracted from training on your own. Create calendar events with yourself to prevent prioritizing your time. The more you control your environment around you, the easier it is to get things done that are important to you.
The second secret to discipline has to do with having an accountability partner. It’s one thing to promise yourself that you will deliver on something, but if you have someone you look up to and expect you to follow through, it’s a new level of accountability. Finding an accountability partner is the best way to become more disciplined. Someone you respect. And if you want to take things to the next level, offer to do this for others on your team.
Being disciplined, being steadfast, and avoiding temptations in your quest for your goals, require engineering your environment and accountability structure to where it makes it easier to reach the next level.
