The Power of Purpose

Updated: Sep 21, 2022

A purpose is the source of meaning and motivation that drives a player to do their best. Players with a sense of purpose are confident. Team members want to be part of something larger and more important than themselves. A team's goal gives players a more profound sense of connection and meaning.

According to Daniel Coyle, author of The Culture Code, three key elements define high-performing, successful teams:

  • Belonging: "We are close."

  • Psychological Safety: "We feel safe."

  • Alignment: "We share a future"

A team purpose helps align people; it provides a reason why the team exists and why they want to accomplish something. Designing a team purpose helps define a shared future; it gives clarity and motivation and drives players into action.

A team purpose helps translate the overarching 'why' into a more direct, closer, and fulfilled experience. Every player craves to play for a team with a defined purpose.

A purpose defines direction, identity, and design. A sense drives goals. At Next Level Soccer Academy, we help every player find their purpose.

I have used three questions to help players find a team's purpose:

  1. What do you do?

  2. For whom do you play?

  3. What impact do you want?

Then write your purpose statement: Our team (answer to #1) to (answer to #2) so that (answer to #3).

You see your team's potential. It's time others see it too.
